Planning a Couples Spa Day: How to Get It Right

By SpaPeep

A spa day for two is a reliably good gift — for an anniversary, a birthday, or simply because both of you have had a hard month. A few decisions make the difference between a lovely afternoon and a disjointed one.

Book the couples room specifically

This is the part people miss. A "booking for two" may mean two separate rooms at the same time. If you want to be in the same room, say so explicitly — it needs a larger room and two therapists, and it is the first thing to get booked out.

Book earlier than you think

A week ahead for a weekday. Two weeks or more for a weekend, and considerably more around Valentine's Day, Diwali or New Year.

You do not need matching treatments

One of you may want deep tissue while the other wants something gentle. That is fine — just tell the spa when booking so both sessions run the same length and you finish together.

Allow more time than the treatment

A 60-minute massage is a two-hour visit once you include arriving, changing, the treatment and not rushing out. If the spa has a steam room or a lounge, allow another half hour. The unhurried part is most of the value.

Questions worth asking

  1. Is this a shared room or two separate rooms?
  2. What is included — steam, shower, refreshments?
  3. Can we choose different treatments?
  4. How long from arrival to leaving, realistically?
  5. Is the quoted price the final amount for both?

Mistakes people make

  • Scheduling something straight after. Dinner at a fixed time turns the whole afternoon into clock-watching.
  • Booking a surprise without checking. Some people genuinely dislike being massaged by a stranger. Ask first.
  • Choosing on photographs alone. The interiors in the pictures are not the therapist you get.
  • Forgetting allergies. Mention both people's sensitivities when booking, not on arrival.

A good default plan

Late morning on a weekday, if you can both take the time. Ten minutes of steam, a 60-minute massage each in the same room, then somewhere quiet for lunch afterwards with nothing scheduled behind it. Quieter, cheaper and considerably more relaxing than a Saturday evening.

Frequently asked questions

What is a couples treatment room?

A larger treatment room with two tables side by side, so two people are treated at the same time by two therapists. It needs advance booking since it requires both the room and two staff.

How far ahead should I book?

A week for a weekday, two weeks or more for weekends and around holidays. Couples rooms are the first thing to sell out at most spas.

Do both people have to have the same treatment?

Usually not. Most spas will happily give one person a deep tissue massage and the other something lighter. Confirm when booking so they schedule the same duration.
