Your First Time at a Spa: Exactly What to Expect
Most first-timers are a little anxious, and almost all of it comes from not knowing the sequence. Here is the whole thing, start to finish.
Before you go
Eat something light an hour or two beforehand — a full stomach is uncomfortable face-down, and going in hungry is distracting. Drink some water. Skip the workout right before if you can.
Arriving
Arrive ten to fifteen minutes early. You will usually fill in a short form covering injuries, recent surgery, allergies, pregnancy and any medical conditions. Answer it honestly — it changes how the therapist works on you.
The consultation
The therapist should ask what brought you in, whether anything hurts, and what pressure you prefer. If you have a specific complaint — a stiff neck, a sore lower back — say so now.
Changing
You will be shown to the room, given disposable underwear, and left alone to change and get onto the table under the sheet. The therapist knocks before coming back in.
During
You stay covered the whole time. The therapist folds back the sheet to expose only the limb or area being worked on, and covers it again before moving on. This is standard practice and any professional spa follows it without being asked.
You can speak at any point — to adjust pressure, to say a spot is tender, to ask for more time somewhere, or to stop. None of that is rude.
Afterwards
The therapist leaves so you can get up slowly and dress. Take your time; standing up too fast after lying down for an hour can leave you light-headed. Most spas offer water afterwards. Drink it.
How you might feel
Relaxed and slightly sleepy is the most common outcome. After firmer work you may feel mildly sore the next day, similar to post-exercise soreness — that fades within a day or two.
Things nobody tells you
- It is fine to fall asleep. It happens constantly and therapists take it as a compliment.
- Your stomach may gurgle. That is your body relaxing. Nobody minds.
- You can keep your underwear on if you prefer. Just say so.
- If anything feels wrong at any point, you can end the session. You are never obliged to continue.
Frequently asked questions
What do I wear during a massage?
You will be given disposable underwear or shorts and left alone to change. You stay covered by a towel or sheet throughout, and the therapist uncovers only the area being worked on.
Do I have to talk during the massage?
Not at all. Some people chat, most go quiet after a few minutes. Say what you need at the start, then it is entirely fine to say nothing for the rest of the hour.
How early should I arrive?
Ten to fifteen minutes before your slot. That gives you time to fill in a short health form, use the washroom and change without rushing.
